Isn’t it marvelous when good things happen to the talented people that you know and admire? Speaking of which, have you seen the June issue of VERANDA? This is the world’s leading interior design magazine that features only the best of the best, and their latest issue has a wonderful spread on the artist, Harrison Howard. 

Harrison Howard’s chinoiserie prints are just so charming! If you haven’t seen them, you must check out our collection of Harrison Howard prints.

One of our good customers has six of his prints on the wall in her living room. They look fabulous! And a friend of mine has a collection of his prints in her powder room. Well, you can imagine what she tells the ladies at her dinner parties – “Drink plenty of wine, girls . . . the show is in the powder room!” Harrison Howard’s giclee prints are such fun and magical!

Next, we must talk about Julie Wear! The fabulous Julie Wear is world renowned for her famous paintings of thoroughbred horses. (Queen Elizabeth II personally commissioned Julie to paint her beloved stallion, and that painting hangs in Buckingham Palace today!) Although I hate to tout competitors, we are so proud of Julie. She has made the cover of New York’s Scully and Scully catalogue.

Sallie Home has Julie Wear’s Fine Porcelain tableware collection in our store. Everyone loves it – especially our brides. We love to pare it with our William Yeoward Crystal.

Meyer lemons add a special touch to this recipe. If you’ve never heard of Meyer lemons, you must go out and try them.

The Meyer lemon is a citrus fruit with Chinese origins. It is native to China, and it’s believed to be a cross between a true lemon and an orange. Meyer lemons are rounder and more yellow than a normal lemon. They have a sweeter, less acidic flavor than normal supermarket lemon varieties. This makes them ideal for a sweet treat this Mother’s Day.

Meyer Lemon Almost Soufflé

Prep Time: 25 minutes
Total Time: 40 minutes
Yield: 4 servings

Ingredients

2 Meyer lemons
3 large eggs, separated
3 egg yolks
3/4 cup sugar, minus 2 tablespoons

Directions

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees.

Zest and juice the Meyer lemons. Set aside.

Fill the bottom of a double broiler with 2 inches of water. Bring the water to a simmer. Reduce the heat to low.

In the top of the double broiler, add 6 egg yolks. Whisk until the yolks turn foamy. Slowly pour in the sugar, as you continue to whisk the eggs.

Whisk in the lemon juice and lemon zest.

Continue to whisk until the mixture thickens. This takes about 10 minutes. Remove from heat.

In a bowl, whisk the egg whites until they are almost stiff. The egg whites should hold their shape, but they should not be dry.

Gently fold the egg whites into the lemon-egg-sugar mixture.

Carefully pour the mixture into a 9-inch pie plate. We recommend using Juliska’s beautiful Pie/Quiche Dish, which features a scalloped rim with a rustic thread and berry motif.

Bake the soufflé in the oven for 15 minutes, or until it is just set. It should be a pretty pale golden color and nicely puffed. Serve within 10 minutes of removal from the oven.

Downton Abbey has everything that I adore: beautiful scenery, the most gorgeous costumes ever stitched, scandalously wonderful plot lines, and ever so witty dialogue.  Most of the witty dialogue is spewed by that great British actress, Dame Maggie Smith (Oscar for “The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie”), who plays the acid-tongued Violet, Dowager Countess of Grantham.  We can’t get enough of her… Oh, and did I mention the bedding? The fine stitching, the lace, the drawnwork; it is all simply to die for.

The story revolve around the Crawley family and their servants. The father, Robert, is the Earl of Grantham, and Lord Crawley he is the master of Downton Abbey.  He has one problem. He only has daughters. And with the death of his male heir abroad the Titanic, this spells trouble for him.  The next in line is a distant cousin from Manchester who comes into the picture. Did I say daughters and a handsome young man?? Oh, no more from me on the plot. Just close your eyes and repeat – “There’s no place like “Downton Abbey, there’s no place like Downton Abbey.”
