How to Set a Beautiful Table (Without Overthinking It)

A beautiful table isn't about owning everything — it's about layering a few good pieces with intention. Here's the formula our stylists use for the tables in our Ladue showroom, from Tuesday dinner to Thanksgiving.

Start with the Foundation

Every table starts with linen: a placemat at each seat for everyday and casual dinners, or a tablecloth or runner when the occasion calls for it. This layer sets the mood — woven naturals read relaxed, beaded and metallic mats from Kim Seybert read celebration.

Layer the Plates

The everyday stack is simple: dinner plate, salad plate. For entertaining, add a charger or service plate underneath — it anchors the setting and stays put through courses. Mixing is encouraged: a fine china charger under casual stoneware, or a colored salad plate on white dinner plates, changes the whole table for the cost of one piece.

Flatware and Glassware, Simply

Flatware goes in order of use, outside in; forks left, knives and spoons right, blade facing the plate. For glasses, a water glass above the knife, wine glass beside it — add stems only for what you're actually pouring. Nobody needs five glasses at a family dinner.

The Finishing Touches

Cloth napkins — always; they instantly elevate even pizza night. Add napkin rings when you want polish, candlelight when you want atmosphere, and something low down the center: bud vases in a row, a bowl of fruit, votives. Keep centerpieces below eye level so conversation flows over them.

The Seasonal Trick

You don't need new dishes for every season — you need one changeable layer. Keep white dinnerware constant and swap placemats, napkins and salad plates: blush and greens in spring, blue and white in summer, ruby and gold for the holidays. It's the most economical way to own "many" tables.
