Buhera Basket Lamp 5 by Ngala Trading Company
The base of this unique table lamp is a basket that has traditionally been used for storing mealie (corn) meal and beer by people living in the Buhera District of Eastern Zimbabwe. Traditionally cow dung is smeared on the outside to make the vessels waterproof and a small lid is woven to stop the neck of the basket. Since our Buhera Baskets do not need to be waterproofed - we skip the application of the cow dung.
The baskets are woven by women only. A hole in the ground is used to lower the working area as the weavers work on the ground and not tables. During the rainy season (mid-December to mid-April) there are very few baskets available as the women have to farm. A basket of this size takes about four days to make. Due to the nature of production methods and the use of natural materials, each product may vary slightly in both dimensions and coloring - we believe that these natural variations enhance the authenticity of each item.
